Truth vs. Perception
Scenarios
I. A romantic relationship. Girl is (or believes she is) totally in love with Boy. Boy does not reciprocate, but acts like he does. Girl believes his every word, and believes (erroneously) that Boy is indeed in love with her. Girl feels happiness at his supposed "love".
II. Another romantic relationship. Girl and Boy both have feelings for each other, but Girl cheats on Boy repeatedly. She has sexual relations with many other people, but they're all one-shot things and no emotional bond or commitment is formed. Boy never finds out about Girl's proclivities, and believes that she always has been and always will be faithful to him.
III. A murder case. Man is completely innocent, but much circumstantial evidence exists that seems to point to him being the perpetrator.
IV. A "friendship". Girl A believes she is friends with Group. Boys A and B and Girls B, C, and D all share a disliking for Girl A. They talk about her incessantly behind her back, saying the worst things imaginable about her. They do invite her on some outings and to most parties. Girl A believes that she is welcome and invited at every event Group has. Girl A enjoys being with Group and believes they are friends.
V. A narcissist. Woman thinks that everybody in the world adores her. She is not a true narcissist in that she has true feelings and cares for others, but she does believe herself better than all those around her. She's really average in almost every way.
VI. Religion. Church believes in specific Deity. Deity does not exist. Members go throughout life acting in accordance with the laws supposedly put forth by Deity, which harm noöne and in fact are solid guidelines for good moral conduct. No living person will ever learn that Deity does not exist.
VII. Delusions. Man believes that there is another person almost always with him. Would be termed "Imaginary Friend", but Man honestly believes that Figment exists, albeit invisibly. He does not cast blame on Figment, it just keeps him company (but remember, he did not consciously create this character) because he lives alone.
Questions
I. Is truth actually more important that perception?
II. Is there ever a situation in which the other is more important? ie if you said truth is more important, is there ever a situation in which perception is more important? and vice versa.
III. Which do you believe "rules the world" so to speak?
IV. What would you do as an observer who somehow knew to be true all of the facts about each scenario given here? Why? What would you expect to come of this course of action?

What does this mean to you? I'm going to start sucking at responding to threads, since I always use the track this thread feature to keep up with conversations.
If I do that, I'm sorry - feel free to yell at me on my most recent post at any time.
=]
Also, they arbitrarily chose which of my userpics to keep. How depressing.

Oh yeah, and I am absolutely terrible with connecting usernames to people, so if I delete you by mistake I'm very sorry, let me know and I'll add you back right away ^_^
On another note, rap music on laptop speakers sounds atrocious.

Thank you for your participation.
PS. This poll is open to the public. It's for a paper I'm writing, and I would much appreciate it if you would be so kind as to tell your friends. They don't have to be bilingual, the most important questions are the ones at the ends which do not require any second-language skills whatsoever. Thank you!
Additional questions that I didn't think to include on the poll... it would be great if you could answer them in the comments (it's okay to post anonymously if you are so inclined):
What is the most difficult aspect of learning a new language? If you speak only your native tongue(s), then what do you imagine would be the most difficult aspect?
Japanese has a word aizo, which conveys a simeltaneous feeling of love and hatred toward the same object. Do you, as a non-Japanese speaker, have trouble with that concept? Would you expect the Japanese to be more comfortable with that concept than would be an English speaker?

And for a time believed it too
But recently I've wondered
Just why I do the things I do
Everything is calculated
To you it's all a game
I realize that I'm just a pawn
Just another choice to make
A strategy, a thing to plan -
But love cannot be strategized
It's volatile, spontaneous
And it isn't just a game
Taking turns and making moves
Taking notes and making plans
It doesn't work that way
I know you have emotions
They run deep and they run true
I've seen you cry
I've seen you break
But you've built your walls
And I'm too late
You always seem so cold
And I can't believe I've let this go
Overlooked it for so long
You treat my love like it's a given
No matter what you do
Like I'll forgive you anything
For fear of losing you
But that's over now
I'm sick of it
You treating me the way you do
And I'm going now to walk away
Let you find another toy
Because I refuse to wait around
In case you decide I'm the one
So now I say - I've had enough
Enough of you, your lies and games
To say I'm giving up on you
It's only been forever since I've written anything!
